The Historic Village at Allaire in Farmingdale is one of the state’s best-kept historical landmarks, with buildings still standing from the 1800’s. The Historic Village offers a hands-on experience to portray what life was really like in the early 19th century. Kids of every age will love the interactive displays and activities, costumed characters and 13 historic buildings — which is open from April to November on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 4 PM. A day at the Historic Village at Allaire is a day that’ll be filled with fun, family and discovery.

A living museum and life-like experience

The Historic Village at Allaire is a living history museum, so it’s more interactive and memorable for everyone that steps foot inside. Sometimes a textbook isn’t exciting enough to be memorable, but when you can interact and truly experience what life was like during a different time period, it makes that piece of the past that better.

More than 13 historic buildings to explore on-site

With so much to do and see, the Historic Village at Allaire makes a great day trip for the whole family, no matter what part of the state you are traveling from. Its property houses 13 historic homes, craft shops, a chapel, a general store, a bakery, exhibit halls and more. Your big kids will be impressed after visiting The Row House and Village Museum, which is an example of a remaining home of 10 or more individuals.

Gather around to learn blacksmith skills, bread making and more via The Historic Village at Allaire

Learn skill old and new, like bread making

It’s not every day that you can bake a loaf of bread from scratch. Mamas, bring the kids to the Bakery at the Historic Village—it’s here that they can learn all about the process from start to finish. From mixing ingredients to kneading the dough to watching it bake in the beehive oven, the family can get their hands messy and leave with their very own loaf of bread to devour. Whether or not you plan to bake, be sure stop by the bakery to grab a delicious pastry, a hot drink in the winter or a refreshing lemonade in the summer.

Live demonstrations, entertainment and special historical events

Afterward, make your way to the Blacksmith Shop. There’ll be someone actively making products that used to be used in the village, and you can learn all about the art of the blacksmithing when you stop by. Many of the products produced here are sold in the General Store, so check it out before you head home. You can also watch live reenactments and demonstrations as well, thanks to the dozens of fully costumed characters who walk around throughout the day. There are always special events and workshops held throughout the year including cooking, sewing and blacksmithing
