Tucked away in Hamilton Square, NJ, you’ll find a garden oasis with blooms from around the world—literally. Sayen House & Gardens is home to vibrant plant collections from China, Japan, and England that still thrive today, thanks to the vision of world traveler and gardener Frederick Sayen. Back in the early 1900s, he purchased a 30-acre plot, built a charming bungalow-style home, and began planting what would become a lush botanical haven. Today, you’ll find more than 1,000 azaleas, nearly 500 rhododendrons, and over 250,000 flowering bulbs in the spring alone. It’s no surprise this spot is a favorite for engagement shoots, wedding ceremonies, and weekend strolls across its scenic footbridges. Read on for more about Sayen House & Gardens, and why it’s one of the best in the state. (feature photo credit: istock/Wirestock)

Beauty in the botanicals

Whether you’re a nature lover, garden enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful spot to explore, Sayen House & Gardens in Hamilton is a hidden gem worth discovering. With walking trails, peaceful fish ponds, and charming pavilions, this picturesque park is filled with blooms year-round thanks to a mix of annual and perennial displays. But it’s not just about the flowers—Sayen Gardens is also home to local birds and wildlife who thrive among the wooded paths, rolling fields, and gentle streams. As you explore, don’t miss the photo-worthy spots like the koi pond bridge, the umbrella fountain, the waterfall at Labaw Pointe, and the gazebo tucked inside Temple Gardens. Perfect for a quiet morning stroll or an afternoon adventure, this serene space offers something beautiful in every season. Spring, however, is when the garden really shines, when the azaleas, rhododendrons, and dogwoods pop, revealing a rainbow of gorgeous color. And be sure to mark Mother’s Day for the annual Azalea Festival, where you can stroll among 250 thousand flowering bulbs, watch musical performances, peruse food and craft vendors, and take a FREE family portrait.
