And luckily, New Jersey has both calm and thrilling spots where you can do it—from the Hudson River with scenic NYC views to the ocean and bays, getting on a stand-up paddleboard (aka SUP) is a fun and fit way to spend a summer afternoon. North Jersey

Flatwater Paddle Co.
Need calm waters for the family? Flatwater is conveniently located by the Monksville Reservoir, or choose from three other locations. For a group experience, rent a Dragon Board, which can hold a family of four paddlers.

Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse
Free paddleboarding in NJ is available on select days at the Boathouse. The process is simple: check in at the front desk (no reservations are required), put on a life jacket, head to the beach for a short lesson, and start paddling. Donations of any size are appreciated, but not necessary.

Resilience Paddle Sports
If you want to paddle on the Hudson with NYC views, Resilience has rentals and tours that float you down the river. You can also take a SUP yoga class, sign up for a STEM program that includes stewardship of the Hudson Estuary, or take a SUP practice session.

Ready to get on a paddleboard with the fam and spend some time on the water? Located on the intercoastal in Manasquan, you can rent the paddleboards and equipment on the spot and head out stat (they will show you the best places for SUP). There are also guided tours if you have a group.

Pedals and Paddles
Taking a day trip to the Jersey Shore and want to do something unique? Visit Pedals and Paddles and rent a stand-up paddleboard with the fam. You can choose from 30 minutes to an hour on the water, and they will provide a life jacket for you to wear.

Sandy Hook Kayaks
A beautiful spot to SUP and glide through the water, the sandy shores of the Spermaceti Cove make for a memorable day. One of the best things about this location is the 250-year-old Sandy Hook Lighthouse, an excellent place to explore after you have paddled. There are private lessons, SUP Yoga, and rentals.

Choose your paddleboarding adventure, from lessons and EcoTours to yoga classes. For a picture-perfect backdrop, go on the Sunset Paddle Board Experience, where you can paddle out as the sun goes down on Barnegat Bay.

Aqua Trails
From mid-June to Labor Day, take a naturalist-guided paddleboarding tour of a salt marsh and Cape May Harbor. If you want to try something a little different, they also offer clinics, or you can rent a paddleboard and explore on your own.
