It has been a stressful few months, and finally, many of us are starting to think about appointments we might have been putting off throughout the pandemic. Or, perhaps the pressure of our “new normal” has triggered an old problem. If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering what these first COVID-era trips back to the doctor will look like. I sat down with the team at The Spine & Sports Health Center in Hudson County, a medical practice specializing in spine and joint pain relief for adults and kids, to find out what patients can expect during a visit. With locations in Hoboken and Bayonne, they recently added a new Jersey City location (find out more about it here.) I’ve interviewed their team in the past writing about their targeted pain management, physical therapy, sports medicine, chiropractic and massage treatments, and how they help many moms with varying types of pain—which is excellent news for mamas like me looking for mommy back pain relief. The practice sees a lot of moms struggling with back problems triggered by things like childbirth and all the extra lifting we do (these kids are heavy). They also treat mamas in pelvic floor care, which we know can significantly affect the quality of life. During quarantine, their medical services remained available for patients who needed them. And throughout it all, they’ve put safety first.

The practice has staggered appointments, so there isn’t a high concentration of patients in the office at once. The staff is wearing PPE, and they ask that patients wear masks as well. They’ve increased cleaning and sanitizing, as well as added temperature checks, and there’s a certified HEPA air purifier in the massage room. You’ll notice plastic screens at all front desks and signage about social distancing, though typically, you won’t find yourself a whole lot of company in the office when you go. “We try to keep the appointment windows spaced so that interaction with anyone other than staff doesn’t happen. We keep patient visits efficient and concise,” Dr. Iannaccone says. “We have a very open office, so they can expect to see a wide-open space with minimal flow of patients.”
Because the COVID climate has been changing so frequently, doctor’s offices have found themselves in a near-constant state of change as well. At The Spine & Sports Health Center, the staff is regularly evaluating procedures and protocols to ensure patients get the care and pain relief they need in the safest way possible. From the beginning, the practice remained open for all necessary medical services with their physicians, nurse practitioner, and added telemedicine for the patients who could not or did want to come in. “We decided it was better to stay open throughout the pandemic for our patient’s care. As a result, we’ve been adjusting while keeping our patients and staff safe,” says Dr. Ferdinand Iannaccone, an interventional pain management specialist at The Spine & Sports Health Center.

Telemedicine will continue to expand and be a way for patients to connect without having to physically visit the office.

Telemedicine is still available

Recognizing that not everyone can go out right now, the practice will continue to offer telemedicine for pain management and sports medicine. For other types of appointments that are better in-person, like chiropractic and massage (which, by the way, you can get for 50% off if it’s your first visit!), they are adding appointments following state and local directives. “I hope that as we continue to show that we are treating patients safely and reliably, patients will make use of the multiple modalities we’re offering, as we know each patient has a different circumstance throughout this pandemic,” says Dr. Iannaccone. After all, being healthy and safe is the main goal for everyone.
