Last week we were invited to see Pinkalicious the Musical, direct from New York City, at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal, NJ. The Axelrod was recently nominated as the best small theater in the state of New Jersey and it was clear as to why. This was our first time visiting the Axelrod Performing Arts Center and I can tell you it will not be our last.
Many theaters are unequipped to handle the needs of children. If you have been to a theater that is not child-friendly, you understand the anguish of a child who cannot see what they excitedly came to see. The Axelrod is a small theater, yet it is comfortable and spacious. We were sitting in row M and the layout of the theater allowed for both of my children, aged four and five, to see the stage perfectly, even with grown adults in front of them.
Even if you’ve never heard of Pinkalicious before, it’s not too hard to figure out the theme. Pinkalicious the Musical, is based off the award-winning books by Victoria Kann and is about a little girl who just loves the color pink. Pinkalicious loves the color pink so much that she finds herself in a very serious predicament after eating one too many pink cupcakes.
The musical was delightful and entertaining from start to finish. There was so much more of a storyline that I had expected. Themes like healthy eating habits, friendships, sibling revelry and honesty were taught to children. As an adult, I enjoyed the reminder to take more time with my family and less time working.
The show time is just about one hour, which was absolutely perfect for the younger audience members. I had no idea Pinkalicious had such a following, as many members of the audience were decked out in their Pinkalicious swag. Items such as books, bright pink feather boas, wands and T-Shirts are available for purchase at the show. After the show, enjoy some delicious pink cupcakes and pink lemonade!
Pinkalicious the Musical is a cheerful and fun play for children and tweens. The Axelrod Performing Arts Center is the perfect location for children to enjoy one of their first tastes of live theater here in New Jersey.
