Cave of the Winds at Niagara Falls: Get Soaked In Fun

  • By Christine Curatolo Flanz

When my husband and I decided to take a family trip to Niagara Falls, I knew I wanted to experience the Falls from every possible angle. That meant exploring them in different ways—from riding the electric Maid of the Mist boat to heading up into the clouds for panoramic views from Skylon Tower. So when I learned that Cave of the Winds takes you down into the Niagara Gorge, where wooden walkways bring you just feet from the thundering Bridal Veil Falls, I knew we had to go. Cave of the Winds gets you so close to the Falls that you can feel the full force and power (warning: you will get soaked, but it was worth it), something we’ll never forget. Keep reading to learn more about Cave of the Winds and what to expect when you book this attraction. (featured photo credit: NJ Mom)

Get close to the Falls

Visiting Niagara Falls had been on my bucket list for years, and it truly lived up to the hype. One highlight was Cave of the Winds, which brought us so close to the Falls that we could feel the incredible power of the water and the sheer force of nature all around us. My kids loved feeling the spray and hearing the Falls roar from the wooden walkways. It was loud, wet, and a little wild—and that’s exactly what made it so much fun.

Stand on the Hurricane Deck

As we entered the Cave Of The Winds, we were given yellow ponchos to help keep us dry. With our walking shoes on and ponchos ready, we followed the crowd along the wooden walkways to the Hurricane Deck, a small, close-up wooden viewing platform that brings you within 15-20 feet of Bridal Veil Falls, where rushing water and spray surround you. Standing on the deck, you’re right beside the Falls, and the roar is so loud it’s hard to hear anything else. I was amazed by just how close we got. I knew we’d get to experience the water from a different perspective, but feeling the spray firsthand was such a thrill. It’s also a great spot for photo ops, and we took plenty of photos that showed how close we were to the Falls. NJ MOM Tip: The walk along the Hurricane Deck is about a quarter mile round trip and includes plenty of stairs, so if you have small children, keep in mind it may take longer.

Prepare to get soaked

The best part? Getting soaked! In fact, it’s like standing in a powerful downpour with winds up to 68 miles per hour. When you are standing on the deck, you are completely under the Falls, so the water doesn’t go directly on you. Instead, the intense wind blows the spray directly at you from all angles. The yellow souvenir ponchos protected us somewhat, but the high winds blow them around, and water gets underneath. On the way back down, we were wet, but all agreed we’d happily do it all again for the thrill of getting so close to the Falls. NJ Mom Tip: Wear quick-drying clothes (like athletic wear or swimwear underneath) and avoid heavy fabrics like denim if you can.

Is Cave of the Winds good for kids?

This is a great attraction for kids, especially if they enjoy nature and hands-on experiences. Littles can see the waterfall up close, feel the spray, and experience the excitement. It gets very loud the closer you get to the Falls, so if you have children who don’t like loud noises, keep that in mind.

Do you get wet at Cave of the Winds?

Getting wet is part of the experience, especially on the Hurricane Deck. Wear shoes that can get wet, and consider packing a change of clothes and a towel if you plan to see other attractions afterward.

How long is the Cave of the Winds?

It takes about an hour to walk the wooden pathways and reach the Hurricane Deck, but it can take longer during busy periods, especially if you stop to take in scenic viewpoints or spend time on the paths.

Do you need to buy Cave of the Winds tickets in advance?

The Cave of the Winds tickets are only available at the Cave of the Winds on Goat Island or the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center. Because Cave of the Winds is a timed, ticketed attraction, make your reservation when you enter the park. You can also buy tickets in person before the day you want to go.
