With sports in full swing, now is the perfect time to get your young athletes assessed for any cardiac or concussions to ensure their optimal health. With that in mind, join the Jersey City Medical Center and RWJBarnabas Health at the grand opening of the Matthew J. Morahan III Health Assessment Center For Athletes at Newport Centre Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 9 AM to 12 PM. They’ll be offering free screenings for young athletes, including cardiac and concussion, which can help identify underlying conditions, establish a baseline, and prevent future issues. And you can also meet a sports legend too—former NY Giant and Superbowl Champion David Diehl will be there to snap photos and meet young players. Scroll down for more information about the event and how to pre-register. (featured photo credit: istock/matimix)

Cardiac Screenings For Young Athletes 6-18 Years Old

Nearly 90 percent of sudden cardiac deaths in young athletes occur during or after athletic activities, and hidden heart conditions are often the cause. When preliminary testing to identify serious cardiac problems is provided to young athletes, they may avoid sudden cardiac arrest and tragic deaths. The cardiac screening will help identify players who may require further testing or intervention. These screenings are open to the first 50 athletes.

Concussion Screenings For Young Athletes 5-18 Years Old

Having a concussion baseline study (ImPACT) for a young athlete can help identify issues in the future, and this screening is an excellent opportunity to establish one. If an athlete gets hurt and is believed to suffer a head injury, this screening test may be used to evaluate the severity of the head injury and determine when it is safe to return to play. MJM is excited to bring the FDA-approved ImPACT Pediatric® concussion screening for children ages 5 and older. Until recently, concussion screenings were only available for young athletes ages 10 and above. ImPACT Pediatric is an iPad-based computerized test that is individually and easily administered and engaging for children while measuring neurocognitive function. These screenings are available to the first 50 athletes.

Ready To Sign Your Young Athlete Up?

Spaces are limited, so an appointment is required in advance to take advantage of these free screenings. Please use this website to register, and a member of the RWJBarnabas Health team will be in touch via email to confirm appointment availability and time. If you are not contacted regarding your request in the next 2-3 business days, please contact Mustafa.naematullah@rwjbh.org.

For your safety, RWJBarnarabas Health has precautions, including masks must be worn by all participants; only one parent per family will be allowed to attend to limit the number of visitors, and they will follow social distancing guidelines.
