9 Virtual Ways to Celebrate Earth Day in NJ

  • By Athena Kanterakis
  • April 21, 2020
Children Specialized Refresh Outpatient

While we’re not venturing out further than our front yards these days, the whole fam can still celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd. This year is even more special—it’s the 50th anniversary and to mark the occasion, so many events have turned virtual. You and the fam can celebrate all week with the #NJMOM Earth Day Challenge,  check out the Adventure Aquarium for a Facebook event, discover plants in your yard with NJ Audubon Society BioBlitz Celebration and learn how to make a water awareness necklace after a yoga class with Pure Toms River Yoga. And even as we stay put at home keep this mind: You’re reducing the carbon footprint, resulting in less pollution, better air quality and a chance for animals to reclaim their natural habitats (just look at this Yosemite bear party for proof). So, go ahead, pour out a few glasses of green juice and toast the earth this week.

Psst! We love seeing your stay-at-home adventures around New Jersey. Be sure to tag your photos with #NJMOM and @njmom for a chance to be featured in our round-up next week.

The #NJMOM Earth Day Challenge, April 22-27
Challenge accepted—whether it’s creating an Earth Day craft that doubles as a homeschool science lesson with your littles, setting up a recycling station in your garage or planting a vegetable garden, we want to see how your fam is celebrating Earth Day. Tag #NJMOM in your Earth Day adventures all week and we’ll pick one winner at random on April 28th, who will be the first to receive an exclusive “#NJMOM Fuel” Yeti Rambler 20oz Reusable Tumbler with Magslider Lid, valued at $40.

EarthDay.org 50th Anniversary Earth Day Virtual Celebration, April 22
Over the 24 hours of Earth Day, EarthDay.org will fill the digital landscape with global conversations, calls to action, performances, video teach-ins and more. No matter where you are, you can speak up, act, vote, and educate to help give back to our Earth. Every hour, on the hour, they’ll have a new, powerful way for you to demand action and drive change, share what you’re doing, today and from where you are.

Adventure Aquarium United For Earth Day Celebration, April 22, 12 PM
Adventure Aquarium in Camden is teaming up with the Philadelphia Zoo and The Academy of Natural Sciences to host an Earth Day celebration in honor of our great planet. Head over to their Facebook at 12 PM on Earth Day, and don’t forget to check out all the fun activities they’ve been posting on their page this week.

Earth Day Virtual Celebration, April 22, 10 AM – 12 PM
The members of The Environmental Club will be sharing a video on the Rowan College of Burlington County’s Office of Student Life’s Instagram talking about the history of earth day and the importance of looking after our planet and offer different ways you can help.

NJ Audubon 50th Anniversary Earth Week BioBlitz Celebration, April 22-28
Take part in this state-wide science extravaganza by downloading an app and photographing plants and animals in and around your yard and house. You’ll be able to interact with New Jersey Audubon staff through daily challenges, a friendly competition among NJ counties, and fun learning opportunities. Download iNaturalist, a crowd-sourced online application, where you can just take a photo, upload it to the site and join hundreds of people learning together about all the amazing plants and animals in New Jersey.

Somerville Environmentalists: Spend Earth Day 2020 in the Backyard, April 25
This year, Somerville’s Environmental Commission has combined their Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 24) celebrations for an all-day virtual celebration on Saturday, April 25. Head outside your backyard and snap a selfie of the whole fam cleaning up your yard, hanging a bird feeder, make a composting pile, installing a rain barrel or planting a garden. Post your photo on the borough’s social media sites, hashtag it with #EarthDaySomervilleNJ and #EnvironmentalCommission and share it with Somerville Recreation on Facebook and Instagram.
