Let’s face it: seeing Niagara Falls in all its beauty is one of the biggest reasons to take a family trip there. When we visited, we wanted to see the Falls from every angle (including on the water), and Skylon Tower on the Canadian side gave us a view we couldn’t get from the ground. It’s one of the many experiences at Niagara Falls we’ll never forget—enjoying gorgeous panoramic views from the observation deck and having a meal with views of the Falls that feels like you’re on top of the world. Read on to find out what to do at Skylon Tower, and how my family loved spending time there. (featured photo credit: NJ MOM)
Skylon Tower: Views, Dining And Fun Above Niagara Falls
Take a “Yellow Bug” elevator to the top
The fun starts before you even reach the observation deck at Skylon Tower, with glass-enclosed Yellow Bug elevators that go straight to the top at lightning speed. The elevators move along the outside of the Tower, and as they rise, you can watch Niagara Falls and the surrounding city shrink below. The ride only takes about 50 seconds(!), so even kids who might not enjoy heights can get excited about this sightseeing adventure.
See stunning views from the observation deck
Once you reach the top, head to the indoor and outdoor observation decks for panoramic views of Niagara Falls. Reaching 775 feet above the gorge and 520 feet from the base, you can see sweeping views of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls along with the Niagara River and the surrounding parks and city. If the weather isn’t the best, the indoor observation deck gives you the same views and provides shelter. Outside, you can walk around and see the scenery from all different angles.
Watch Niagara Falls light up at night
Nighttime is when it’s really cool to see the Falls, and Skylon Tower is open for night visits if you can swing it with the kids (or even just your S.O.). The Falls are illuminated at night, giving you a completely different view from the observation deck, and it’s truly something amazing to see. During certain seasons, you can see fireworks from the Tower, which is a unique experience. NJ Mom Tip: If you’re planning on coming back for the night, buy a Day/Night pass instead of the regular ticket.
Have a meal high above the Falls
One of the best things to do at Skylon Tower is to sit down and have a meal with stunning wide views of the Falls and Niagara River below. There are two dining spots—The Revolving Dining Room and Summit Suite Buffet—so you have options based on what your family likes. We chose the dining room, and it was such a thrill to see the Falls from every angle. We sat 775 feet above Niagara Falls, and the restaurant slowly rotates a full 360 degrees every hour. If it sounds like you might get dizzy, you won’t—we didn’t even feel it or realize it until we looked out the window and saw the Falls from a different angle. Besides the view, the food was delicious, and they had plenty of kid-friendly options. The Summit Suite Buffet doesn’t revolve, but all the seating is on the Falls side of the restaurant. NJ MOM Tip: If you dine at either restaurant, your meal includes access to the Ride-to-the-Top and observation decks.
Find more family fun inside the Tower
Beyond the scenic views, my kids loved the Daredevil Barrels Museum, an indoor exhibit featuring 13 custom-built barrels that told the often wild and courageous stories of how some intrepid visitors to the Falls decided to take the plunge. We were in awe of how many people attempted this trip, the homemade barrels, and who survived each plunge. Afterward, we headed to the theater to watch the Legends of Niagara Falls, about a young girl trying to save the Falls, featuring wind, mist, and motion in the 15-minute experience. (Warning: littles may get frightened by the unexpected features). It was thrilling, and the 3D/4D made us feel like we were right next to the Falls. After that, we headed to the Skylon Arcade, where the kids played games, and we grabbed a much-needed coffee at the on-site Starbucks cafe. On the way out, we stopped by the gift shop and picked up a few mementos to bring home. Overall, we all agreed that being on top of the Falls is a unique experience we’ll remember forever.
