Niagara Falls is one of those places you have to visit at least once, and when we made the trip (about a 7-hour drive from New Jersey), it truly was one of the most memorable family trips we’ve ever had. One of the most unforgettable moments was hopping aboard one of the Maid of the Mist catamaran-style electric boats. It got us closer to the falls than you could ever get from the shore, even though we were absolutely soaked (trust me, it was worth it!). Keep reading to learn more about booking a Maid of the Mist trip and why the memories last longer than how wet you get at Niagara Falls. (featured photo credit: NJ MOM)
Take A Tour Of Niagara Falls On Maid Of The Mist

Go right into the heart of Niagara Falls
The Maid of the Mist is a two-story, catamaran-style electric boat that can make 360-degree turns near the Falls, and when I booked it, I knew it would be one of those family experiences we’ll talk about for years to come. Since the boats are electric, the ride is quiet and smooth so that you can focus on Mother Nature’s sheer beauty. It’s amazing how close you get to the Falls—I was taken aback to hear 600,000 gallons of water crashing down every second and feel the mist wash over me, as if I was a part of it.

Why getting wet is worth it
I knew we’d get wet when we booked our Maid of the Mist trip and brought rain gear, so when the mist hit our faces, I was glad we were prepared. The Maid of the Mist provides ponchos, but they only go so far when you get close to the rushing water. From the back, I couldn’t help but watch my kids take it all in, letting the mist hit them, and I saw their smiles and laughter as they got wet and felt the rush of the Falls’ sheer power. Viewing the Falls from above gives you an idea of how powerful the water is, but getting this close is a totally different perspective. The mist thickens, the roar grows louder, and the joy on my family’s faces (including mine!) grew as the trip unfolded. It was one of the most memorable parts of our trip, and one my kids keep coming back to (especially how we were soaked on the way back to the hotel).

Learn the history of Niagara Falls
Visiting Niagara Falls isn’t just about taking in its incredible natural beauty—it’s also about experiencing a natural wonder that formed around 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. My kids love learning about history, so while we were at the Falls, we made sure to soak up as much information as we could. Simply put, Niagara Falls is a geological miracle, and in 1896, Nikola Tesla proved he could transmit electricity from Niagara Falls to Buffalo using an alternating-current induction motor. This marked the first long-distance commercial use of the AC system that we still use today. There are many other fascinating facts like this, so stop by the Welcome Center before or after the boat trip to learn more.
