Everyone knows the saying, April showers bring May flowers. So, in the spirit of a new season and making it rain, we can’t wait to shower NJMOMs with these must-know charity events happening in April. From yoga with goats for OASIS tlc and a craft beer Pints for Pets to a ferry boat relay event benefitting American Cancer Society and a community-wide spring cleanup to beautify Morristown, there are plenty of feel-good, fun activities for the whole family – your furry friends included.

1. Prom & Formal Dress Drive
April 1 to April 30, 2018 | 9:00AM to 5:00PM
All month long, you can help support The Unforgotten Haven by donating prom and formal items like gently used dresses, shoes, jewelry and new makeup during the month of April. Drop off at Brandywine Living in Moorestown. The Unforgotten Haven acts as the “wind beneath the wings of all living things” by assisting the homeless, those with financial hardship, terminally ill, domestic violence victims, and veterans.

2. Cars for a Cause
Saturday, April 7, 2018 | 2:00PM to 7:00PM
Who got the keys to my Beemer? Montclair State Car Club’s spring car show will benefit Foster & Adoptive Family Services of NJ. Any and all cars, trucks, and motorcycles are welcome – it’s not just muscle cars! Bring your littlest car enthusiast or mini Tonka truck driver out for this family-friendly charitable event that will also have food, a DJ, prizes, and contests. Spectating is free, but showing off your wheels is $5 online or $10 at the door. The event begins at 2:00PM but please arrive an hour early if you are a show participant.

3. Step It Up for Research 5K / 1-Mile Fun Walk
Saturday, April 14, 2018 | 9:00AM to 12:00PM
Put on your running shoes and get ready to take steps to help Thea’s Star of Hope find less toxic treatments for kids with brain cancer. The 3rd Annual Step It Up fundraiser will feature dance performances by All for Dance, face painting, live entertainment, bounce house, and Surf and Turf Truck grub. Medals for top 3 finishers in Men, Women, and Kids (14 and under.) CASH PRIZES for 1st place in each category. Registration/Check-in is from 9:00AM to 9:30AM; race starts at 10:00AM.

4. MDA Eats N Beats Food Truck and Music Festival
Saturday, April 21, 2018 | 11:00AM to 6:00PM
Music all day, food trucks galore, and tons of activities for the whole family make this a festival with heart that you can’t miss! All proceeds will go towards The Muscular Dystrophy Association in supporting local families in the area who are fighting the multiple diseases that afflict the muscular system, from Duchene’s Muscular Dystrophy to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

5. Morristown Annual Spring Clean Up

Go green or go home. Join Morristown Beautiful, Inc. this Earth Day in a community-wide initiative to clean up Morristown’s parks, playgrounds, lots, and roadways. The nonprofit is dedicated to keeping Morristown clean and green through environmental protection, education, and litter abatement programs. Registration (and breakfast treats) begins at 9:00AM at the Morristown Municipal Building. Any age can participate in this spring clean up, the perfect family activity for doing a world of good.

6. Relay Across The Bay & Bark on Board
Saturday, April 21, 2018 | 1:00PM to 4:00PM
Make history by being part of the very first ever nautical Relay for Life! Join the American Cancer Society of South Jersey for a tour on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, onboard entertainment, memorable ceremonies, and an after-party at Cape May Brewing Co. The Ferry will set sail and travel 17 nautical miles to the Delaware Bay. This is a ticketed, non-traditional relay event that requires all participants to fundraise the minimum for their age group ($35 for adults, $25 for children under 18). Must be registered online AND have the minimum fundraising amount posted by 4/5/18 – there are no extensions to this deadline.

7. Pints for Pets
Saturday, April 21, 2018 | 12:00PM to 4:00PM
Animal lovers, beer lovers, fun lovers – head over to River Horse Brewing Co. for a family-friendly Pints for Pets fundraiser. The popular brewery will showcase adorable, furry friends from EASEL Animal Rescue League who are looking for forever homes. In addition to adoptable pets, there will be Tower Dogs food truck and On Point Grub Taco Truck for all the #eeeeeats, as well as live music from Between Sleep and Awake, a photo booth, pet product vendors, and of course, delicious beer! Bring your own pup and test their smarts on the doggy agility course. Thirty percent of draft beer sales and tours from the day will benefit EASEL, a no-kill animal shelter in Ewing, NJ.

8. Third Annual Miracle Art Show

This annual family-friendly art show supports the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in their mission to help kids fight cancer, injury, and illness. 100% of ticket proceeds, art sales, and raffle tickets go towards the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital of Mountainside, NJ.

9. REED Foundation for Autism Breakfast

The REED Foundation supports individuals with autism and their opportunity to thrive. They aim to maximize charitable giving in order to positively impact the community and bring about social change. This breakfast supports and creates awareness for all the good light the REED Foundation shines on the autistic community and will honor the DoGood Award Recipient, Dr. Peter Mercer, President of Ramapo College.

10. Paint To Empower

April is National Autism Awareness month and Empower U. is hosting a paint-a-glass event to support children on the spectrum. This cheers-worthy event will show you how to paint on your choice of a wine or beer glass. Jennifer Sena from Origami Owl Custom Jewelry will also be selling gorgeous jewels. All profits from jewelry and event ticket sales will go to Empower U’s “Aspire to Inspire” grant which helps those on the spectrum who are unable to afford extracurricular activities. 11. Fun with Farro’s Tees

12. Paint a Wish for Jack’s Kids

Sip, sip, hooray! At this fundraiser event hosted by Mimosas & Masterpieces, you will sip on mimosas, snack on hors d’oeuvres, shop local vendors, and paint for a good cause. Children 10 and older are welcome to attend the event as a paid guest. All proceeds from this event will benefit Jack’s Kids, an organization that aims to help families dealing with childhood illness or disabilities through financial support.

13. ALS Benefit Concert

14. Yoga with Goats

Lay your mat in the field. Then try to pay attention to yoga while baby goats climb on you, push you over and generally cause a ruckus. Why? Because they’re goats. Join teachers from Hot and Soul Yoga and Synergy Hot Yoga as they teach Yoga with Goats at OASIS tlc. This unique fundraising event benefits the nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote inclusion and acceptance of autistic individuals into their local communities by establishing environmentally exemplary farm centers that provide meaningful work, healthy residences, and community interaction. Reservations/advance ticket purchase required here.

15. Monmouth County SPCA Dog Walk + Pet Fair

Head to the Monmouth County SPCA 24th Annual Dog Walk + Pet Fair, where you and your family can play with adorable adoptables, learn about animal welfare, enjoy live music and delicious food (including vegetarian options), and do kid-friendly activities. All proceeds from the event go directly to rescuing, protecting, feeding and caring for the thousands of animals who enter the MCSPCA shelter every year!

Nicole Sodano is a student at Elon University majoring in Journalism and minoring in Visual Art. She lives in Morris County, NJ with her parents and younger brother.
