Whether you’re a first time mom, or you’re like me with a brood of babes (three under four for me, and yes, it’s crazy), bringing a new baby into the world is a unique and transformational experience each time, and one that requires preparation both practically and emotionally. No two babies are the same, and no two births are the same— which is why many mamas want to be as prepared as possible. Enter The Childbirth Training Center at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, which offers a variety of childbirth education and preparation programs designed to meet the needs of soon-to-be parents and extended family members.

Choose from several classes to prepare you for bringing your baby into the world

These programs are led by registered nurses who are certified in childbirth education and excited to help walk parents through their birth experience and the sometimes overwhelming fog of bringing home a newborn. For parents who really want to dive into all the details, the Two-Day Preparation for Childbirth program breaks a complete childbirth education curriculum down into two sessions. As part of the program, you’ll learn relaxation and Lamaze breathing techniques to ease contractions and help with labor and delivery.

But, maybe your busy schedule doesn’t allow you time for a two-day course, or maybe you’re in the thick of toddlerhood and expecting your second or third and just looking for a little refresher. You may want to consider the One-Day Childbirth Preparation Class. This program offers a condensed version of what to expect during labor and birth, what to know in the immediate postpartum period and how to handle that early newborn care. I swear, the second and third times around you honestly do forget a lot about just how fragile newborns are and exactly what they need!

Speaking of #newbornlife, there’s a class just for that too. From bathing and dressing to feeding and infant development, Baby Care Basics has it covered. This is your chance to get some hands-on practice with infant-sized models (and no, they won’t be as cute as your little bundle). The Infant Safety Awareness Class is another big one for new parents, giving important instructions on how to help an infant in distress. You will learn how to recognize the signs and reduce the risk of infant choking as well as how to administer CPR to a baby.

If you’re hoping to nurse, Breastfeeding Today will guide you on the process and techniques of breastfeeding. You’ll get valuable insight on the advantages, the challenges and ways to prepare for breastfeeding. Between proper latch, the difference between a cradle and football hold, and how and when to pump— there’s so much to know. The lactation experts are there to help guide both moms and dads on what they can do to best support the breastfeeding journey.

Moms of older siblings may want to check out the Safe Sitter class at Monmouth Medical Center

Another great class to know about is the Safe Sitter Class. If you’re a seasoned mama who wants to start leaving an older sibling home with the little ones, or get your child ready for a first babysitting job, this is super important. The class is geared towards kids grades 6 through 8 to prepare them with important safety information. The instructor will lead the class in role playing exercises and the prospective sitters will even get to practice with mannequins for scenarios like choking.

While you’re there for your class, you can tour the Eisenberg Family Center which includes labor and delivery, postpartum recovery and nursery units. This will give you a chance to get to know the hospital and talk to staff if you plan to give birth there. Keep in mind though, you can take any of the classes even if you’re giving birth elsewhere. It’s all about education, mamas. These classes are designed to help reduce anxiety about giving birth, instill confidence and set you up to thrive as a #NJMOM.
