After writing last week’s article about the chemicals found in nail polishes, including formaldehyde and TPHP to name a few (a big no-no for pregnant women, children, cancer patients, and anyone for that matter), NJMom staffers wanted to find a healthier way to keep our nails pretty. We realized our major concerns were probably shared with others and involved whether or not the less-chemical version would stay on our nails as long, spending more money per bottle, and which NJ salons offered these products and services.
We reached out to local New Jersey spas and salons, including Karma Organics in Ridgewood and The Salon Hoboken in Hoboken, to create an incentive for making the switch from chemically laden polishes to “5 Free” a little easier for all of us. We realized some of us on staff had over 80 bottles of OPI and Essie in our collection and simply dumping these in the trash was going to be really difficult.
Whether you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, simply want to remove unnecessary chemicals from your daily routine or purchasing products for your children, you will be quite pleased at how easy the switch can be once you see all of the beautiful colors you can choose from. Many brands such as Karma Organics, Zoya and Julep offer “5 free’ nail polishes that get the job done without using formaldehyde and TPHP and range from $6.99-$9.99/ bottle. We were excited to learn that The Salon in Hoboken offers Bioseaweed Gel manicures for only $35. These manicures, while not completely chemical-free, are a big step in a healthier direction for women who want to have the convenience of a gel manicure.
THE EXCLUSIVE NJMOM OFFER:
