Theater For Kids…Can Do Duck: The Musical

As any parent can tell you, it can be both exciting and stressful to try something new with a toddler. I really wasn’t sure how my 1 ½ year old son would react to his first musical. Well, I can happily say that my son loved it! He was completely mesmerized during the entire hour long production of Can Do Duck: The Musical.

The costumes were bright and cheerful, the music was fun and catchy. I also think he really enjoyed the dancing and the playful interactions that the characters had with one another. It can be hard to find wholesome entertainment for children today, but Can Do Duck: The Musical came to the rescue.

The musical centers around two families. One human family and the other a family of ducks. Both families learn about the importance of trying new things, collaboration, and accepting one another. Everyone also learns about the power of a “can do” attitude. The show is also sprinkled with heartwarming tidbits to remind you that “you are loved.”

During the show, audience members were encouraged to turn to one another and tell them that they are loved.

You could just feel the familial attitude created by the musical. It was very refreshing to see a show that was so positive and age appropriate. As an educator, I believe that children can benefit from seeing a live performance. I also believe that it’s important for kids to see an optimistic show with a hopeful lesson, which Can Do Duck: The Musical delivered.

The story of how the musical came to be is just as sweet as the musical itself. Child psychiatrist, Ducktor Morty M.D. wrote the book, The Can Do Duck, when his daughters were young. It was a family affair because Morty’s daughters and wife helped create illustrations for the book. Years later, Morty’s daughter, Arielle Sosland, turned the story into Can Do Duck: The Musical.

Overall, the show was very kid-friendly. There was even a carpeted area for kids to sit on during the show. Children were also invited on stage for certain interactive scenes during the performance. The show is recommended for ages 3-11. However, I would say that toddlers as young as 20 months could enjoy this heartwarming musical. Parents and grandparents will also find the musical very entertaining.

My son happily watched the whole production.
