There’s no doubt the last two years have caused major stress and anxiety, particularly to moms, who’ve had to bear the brunt of being a full-time teacher, chef, and chief entertainer, as well as balancing a job, and life. What’s more, being less active (because there are only so many hours in the day) can bring on nagging pain and stiffness. Sound familiar? Then it may be time to consider a regular massage program that can help alleviate the pain and give you time to decompress. The Spine & Sports Health Center has recently expanded their popular Hoboken massage therapy program to their Jersey City location and brought in Michael Brzozowski, LMT, as its therapist. We sat down with him to talk about the benefits of regular massage and the conditions he can treat for mamas who need relief and a break.

Meet Michael Brzozowski, LMT

Michael Brzozowski is a licensed Massage Therapist who joins The Spine & Sports Health Center with 12 years of experience working in medical settings, alongside chiropractors, physical therapists, and acupuncturists. This unique background has allowed him to learn about different approaches to pain management, both physically and mentally. “The power of massage in helping people feel better is what makes me passionate about what I do. It’s a treatment that can help everyone,” he says. And with specialty techniques in everything from deep tissue massage to sports massage, trigger point massage, Swedish massage, prenatal massage, and myofascial release, Michael can customize the treatment, whether your goal is stress relief or a way to manage pain. “Seeing my patients achieve pain relief is one of my greatest goals and accomplishments in life,” he adds.

How massage therapy can help you feel your best

If you’ve got nagging lower back pain or feel knots from sitting at a computer all day, you can especially benefit from deep tissue massage, says Michael. “With continued massage therapy, you can loosen up the area, which will increase blood flow for pain management and improve your range of motion,” he adds. And while physical relief is always the goal, Michael develops a relationship with his clients to build trust and bond, which helps relieve the pain. “Learning about their background and having conversations is crucial to forging relationships to devise their treatment plan, but it also takes their mind off the pain and is a release,” he says. Still, pain is not always the reason to take advantage of the program—Michael sees patients who want to carve out time to tend to their well-being and look to massage therapy as a way to maintain mental health, relieving stress or anxiety.

Michael’s approach is to treat every patient with tailored therapy each time they come in. “So much of it depends on how you’re feeling that day and what your pain level is. You may have knots from sitting hunched over, a back tension, or just feeling overwhelmed. After I talk to the patient about their concerns, I customize the massage, whether it be Swedish, sports, deep tissue, trigger point, or myofascial release,” he says. And for pregnant moms, his expertise with prenatal massage extends even to the special bed they use for the second or third trimester, which allows a mama with a growing belly to lay on her stomach and feel comfortable. But the best part for Michael is seeing the results firsthand. “It’s so rewarding after I work on someone and see the smile on their faces—I love being able to help them feel better.”
