Wander Along the South Mountain Fairy Trail

Share the love

Find a little slice of magic in a fairy wonderland at the South Mountain Fairy Trail in Millburn. Wander along this one-mile loop and explore mystical miniature houses and castles, made mostly of natural materials, lining a stretch of trail along the South Mountain Reservation Park.  The vision and creation of a special education teacher and #NJMOM, these intricate little pieces of whimsy started popping up in 2011, and have become a draw for families looking for an imaginative escape into nature with the kids.  And now, you can even create your own little fairy house to add to the enchanted woods.

"Faiwies waire ahh you?" Kiri – in her "r"-less accent and In a super high pitch. 💜Can't resist sharing more fairy hike moments. Love the straw roof on this one💚. As Earth day approaches our family's been talking a lot about our relationship with the planet . 🌎Working on cultivating more of a Forrest fairy kind of relationship – which we imagine to be symbiotic (of the non harmful kind) – a true care taker🌱💚🌳. . . . . . #southmountainfairytrail #southmountaintrails #webelieveinfairies #webeliveinmagic #learningthroughnature #natureismagic #familyhikes #invitationtoexplore #getoutsideandexplore #gardenstateofmind #forrestspirit #letthembewild #loveforthewild #earthday🌍

What to know before you go

South Mountain Reservation is a nature reserve on the Rahway River and part of the Essex County Park System. It lies between the ridges of the Watchung Mountains, winding through portions of Maplewood, Millburn, West Orange and South Orange. Spanning 2,110 acres, it’s made of dozens of trails, a dog park, and the South Mountain Recreation Complex.  So how do you FIND the Fairy Trail within all that? #NJMOM tip: park at the Locust Grove entrance at 197 Glen Avenue in Millburn. It’s right across from the Millburn Library. Once you’re there, head toward the Rahway Trail and make your journey through the magic.

Not only are the trails well kept and natural, but you’ll find amazing views along the way, including a few waterfalls. After the fairy trail, if the kids still have some energy to burn off, you can check out everything else the South Mountain Reservation has to offer. The Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange is actually a part of the reservation, along with Essex County’s TreeTop Adventure Course.  Or, if you’re ready for a bite, the popular Millburn Deli, a legendary sandwich shop, is right in town.

South Mountain Reservation is free and open to the public from 8AM to 5:30PM every day, year-round, and its beauty and features change with the seasons.
