#NJMOM Adventure: Lucy the Elephant

Share the love

She’s 65 feet tall, more than a century old, and her big eyes and cartoonish stature stare out at families making their way to the beach in Margate; it’s no wonder Lucy the Elephant is a landmark that draws the curiosity and affection of locals and visitors enjoying a day at the Jersey shore. If you haven’t visited this mammoth mystical Margate fixture, well, we found your next family road trip. Known as the World’s Greatest Elephant, Lucy is one of the oldest surviving roadside tourist attractions in America. Every day of the week in the summer, you can get a lesson in history and architecture and take in incredible 360-degree views as you climb to the top of the 6-story spiral staircase and step back in time to the shore’s earliest days.

Time for an #NJMOM Adventure to see Lucy the Elephant:

You and the family can do a guided tour of Lucy the Elephant, slowly making your way to the top for a sky-high look at the shore. Along the way, your guide will teach you about Lucy’s history, design, and architecture. She is a piece of novelty architecture, made of wood and tin sheeting, dating all the way back to 1881. Lucy was created by a Philadelphia inventor as a form of spectacle to attract prospective real estate buyers to the area. She served as a restaurant, business office and tavern over the years before becoming badly damaged by storms and age. In 1970, she was donated to the Save Lucy Committee, Inc, and a few years later was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Save Lucy Committee, Inc. is committed to restoring and preserving Lucy the Elephant and keeping this unique landmark open to Jersey shore visitors.
