Beach days, pool parties, splash pads, and lake adventures are just around the corner, making now the perfect time to brush up on water safety. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the U.S., and it can happen quickly and silently—even in shallow water. That’s why Five Star Swim School is committed to teaching lifesaving swim skills and promoting water safety throughout the community. Through free Water Safety Presentations at local schools and preschools, they help children learn essential safety skills in a fun, engaging, and age-appropriate way. Water Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know
Keep Eyes on the Water at All Times
When it comes to water safety, there’s no substitute for active supervision. That means keeping your eyes on your child at all times when they’re in or near the water—without scrolling your phone, chatting with friends, or getting distracted by other tasks. Even strong swimmers need close supervision, and even when lifeguards are on duty, parents and caregivers should remain vigilant. Drowning can happen in seconds and is often completely silent, making constant supervision one of the most important ways to help keep kids safe.
Secure Your Pool Area
If you have a pool at home, restricting access is a critical layer of protection. Install a secure fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate around the pool and make sure gates remain closed and locked when the pool isn’t in use. While barriers can help prevent unsupervised access, they should never replace active supervision. Think of pool fences and gates as an extra safeguard, not your only line of defense.
Teach Water Safety Early
Helping kids feel comfortable and confident around water starts with teaching basic water safety skills from an early age. Practice skills like floating on their back, treading water, finding the pool wall, and safely getting out of the water. Just as important, teach children that water is never a place to explore alone. Remind them to always stay within arm’s reach of a trusted adult and ask permission before entering a pool, lake, river, or ocean.
Learn CPR and First Aid
In an emergency, every second counts. Taking a CPR and first aid course can give parents and caregivers the confidence to act quickly while waiting for emergency responders. Keeping these lifesaving skills current is one of the most important things you can do to help protect your family.
Invest in Swim Lessons
One of the best ways to help keep kids safe around water is by enrolling them in swim lessons. Learning to swim not only builds confidence, but it can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. From babies and toddlers to older children, it’s never too early or late to learn essential water safety and swimming skills that can last a lifetime.
